What is the difference between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism?

Modified on Fri, 9 Dec, 2022 at 4:54 PM

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is when your thyroid gland fails to produce sufficient hormones to meet your body’s needs. Weight gain, fatigue, cold sensitivity, and muscle aches are a few symptoms associated with hypothyroidism.

Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, is when your thyroid gland produces excess thyroid hormone. Symptoms may include unexpected weight loss, frequent sweating, nervousness and anxiousness, heat insensitivity, and more.
